EFC ELECTION RESULTS (2)

Employee First Council is a first-of-its-kind initiative in the history of corporate India started in the true HCL spirit.

The response to this initiative was even more heartening when about 1000 HCLites chose to Lead by Collaboration last year. They ensured that EFC was a resounding success. Over 5000 events were held and this novel initiative got HCL into limelight with our company being listed in the Limca Book of Records and winning CII Corporate Wellness Award.

Graduating EFC into its second innings was a bigger challenge because of the high standards set last year. To set the stage of making this second innings even more impactful one more council, Ambassador Council, was added to the existing five. It gives me great pleasure to inform all fellow HCLites that we are through with the EFC elections this year and..

F We received over 1600 nominations across 41 facilities PAN India for 6 councils, a number that reflects your enthusiasm and passion to become a change leader.
F 16,250+ HCLites voted for their friends and colleagues, showcasing their camaraderie and support towards these leaders.
F We received 97500+ votes for all the councils put together in just 1 day of organization wide poll.

I congratulate and thank all HCLites who have participated in this initiative. I am delighted to announce the results of the Employee First Council elections. However, before I share the results, I would like to highlight selection process for your information and benefit as below:

F For facilities having manpower of :
more than 1000 – Nominee receiving less than 20 votes is eliminated
between (500 – 1000) – Nominee receiving less than 15 votes is eliminated
between (200 – 500) – Nominee receiving less than 10 votes is eliminated
less than 200 - Nominee receiving less than 5 votes is eliminated

F A minimum of 3 members are elected in each Council/ facility ensuring a minimum ratio of 1:100, i.e., for every 100 employees 1 is elected to be a part of a council

F In case of a tie (where the number of votes received are same for two or more employees), all the employees are elected if they qualify the above rules.

Following the above criteria’s 1348 NOMINEES have been finally ELECTED for their preferred council PAN India. Please visit the EFC Portal for more details on the results.

I congratulate all the elected leaders and hope that with their continuous enthusiasm, passion and participation, EFC will reach to new levels of transformation. I wish all the elected members All the very Best for their journey ahead.

We are going to continue our work in ETA2 branch.....

Help needed to make a poor boy pay Engineering Fees

Stephen is currently pursuing his 2nd year B.Tech (IT) in SSN and is a physically challenged student. While being treated for a fall in the well during his early childhood, the doctors found out that he was affected by polio. He studied in the Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School in Saidapet, Chennai and ranked consistently as one among the top 5 in the school. He has 4 sisters and 2 brothers and out of which 3 sisters are in school. His father and brother are doing a business and the family income is around Rs. 7000 a month. Such adverse conditions did not deter him from hitting hard at books during his schooling. He toiled very hard and scored 75% in his higher secondary examinations. He was a Tamil medium student in school and so found going tough during the first semester. His first semester GPA was 5.6, with a backlog in Maths. But he thrived hard to improve on it and spiked his score to 7.8 GPA in the 2nd semester, but still with an backlog in Electronic Devices and Circuits. Despite hailing from a Tamil medium background, he held his ground and improved considerably with his performances.Stephen’s father paid Rs.1 Lakh fees for the first year by borrowing money for interest. In the second year, he had to again borrow money for interest and paid around 65K. They are yet to pay Rs.18,750 for the second year, which is pending. Also, they have bought a laptop in an installment scheme, since it has become a compulsory requirement in SSN. Stephen’s father’s income is just enough to face the daily needs of their family, pay for his brother's and sisters' education and meanwhile repaying the housing loan that they have. Stephen’s classmates have been raising money for his books and fees. HE DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR MERIT-CUM-MEANS SCHOLARSHIP, BECAUSE OF ARREARS AND IS IN A FIX ON CONTINUING EDUCATION. At this juncture, Stephen requires help. Help in any form of contribution will help this talented kid climb obstacles and conquer heights.STEPHEN IS REQUESTING HELP . PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL.
We supported in the total contribution of Rs 20,390/-

Swine flu - Provision of masks by CSC

Dear Fellow HCLites,
Hope this mail finds you in good health, high spirits and great contentment. Now I am struck with a saying from Albert Einstein, “Intellectuals solve problems; geniuses prevent them”. When I say PREVENT nothing other than SWINE FLU (H1N1) would have stroked your thoughts. It is threatening the mankind like that of a demon. Many are getting infected and few have lost their life too. While we mourn for all those souls, it is equally important for us to make sure that our near and dear is not one among the victims.
To make each HCL facility a ‘H1N1 Prevention Zone”, CSC has come out with a plan to sell masks in order to keep ourself away from this dreadful virus. These masks will be made available in your respective facilities starting today at cost price. Kindly make use of this special drive and help in having a safe work place.
We have procured from the manufacturer out of CSC fund at Rs 3 for a piece whereas in the local market it is being sold for Rs 10 to15. These masks will be available in a central place in your building and you will get a mail from the CSC team leader or Admin. You just have to drop a minimum of Rs 3 in the box and pick one. If you drop more it will go to CSC fund.
Wearing instructions. You will feel a plastic stick at the edge. That portion is the top and press the stick over your nose and it mould to your size of the nose. Wear the loops on the ears and pull the bottom portion below the chin. If there is additional demand we will procure more.
It is small effort from HCL CSC as we care for you.

Royapuram Boys Home Visit on Aug 15th

We had visited royapuram boys home on Aug 15th 2009. The officials were receptive & gave us lot of details.I'm summarizing them below:
1) It has 3 parts - the reception unit, the home & in-house school.
2) Reception unit - this is the place where the children are initially kept and stay there till CWC(Child Welfare Commitee) decides on their future. All child labourers that we rescue end up here only. The population is dynamic - we saw nearly ~50 kids, ~50% north indians, yesterday.
3) Home - currently accomodates ~120 kids from 1-12the std. Kids stay in a big long hall, dormitory style. It has TV and kids keep their bags in one corner. there is a store-room that has the blankets, pillows etc.
4) School - kids from 1-6th study here. The rest go to a nearby corporation school accompanied by a guardian.
5) Stay - kids can stay till they complete their 12th std. Then they are either sent to their parents or if possible a job / higher study is arranged.
6) Staff - i think ~20+ govt employees work here in a front office. Superintendent - Mrs.Glory Gunaseelan. Asst . Supt - Mrs.Devika Manager - Mr.Adheesan.
7) About the kids - contrary to our expectation most of the kids are not child labourers. They come from a poor family, single-parent, orphan etc.Child labourers form a miniscule of the population.Non tamilnadu kids in reception unit are sent to govt homes in their respective states accompanied by a escort.Only tamilnadu kids are kept in the home. We were informally entertained by a kid called madhan who showed his gymnastic & trick skills - talented boy!

P.S :-

=>That day, while rescuing children’s begging in traffic areas, we had a bad experience in police station. The police peoples treated that lady in bad manner like beating and all. => Those who are know any magazine peoples(especially local magazines) or tv channel peoples as personally please let us know so that we can spread this information to society in all possible ways.

Success will be ours ,only if the concern child is sent to home for studies.
Till now no such child has been sent to home. So our further aim should be to send the
identified children to home.
Further using our CRR activities , we all should create awareness on this so that the identified shop owners will not allow any child labours in their shops.

Free course on FIRST AID for ivolunteers-on 26th April 2009

April 7th is a very significant day! It is the World Health Day! To celebrate this important day, iVolunteer has something lined up for you to equip yourself as a better volunteer- a social doctor.
ARE YOU READY TO BECOME A ‘SOCIAL DOCTOR’?
What would you do if you have the unfortunate moment of having to witness your colleague collapse in front of you? If so, will you have a sense of panic or helplessness? Well, you are not alone! Medical emergencies are inevitable, and it is important for each one of us to be prepared to face it. While handling an emergency situation, every second counts and there is no scope for an error or a second chance.
iVolunteer along with ALERT will be presenting a course on life support skills, that will educate people on how best they can help to save a life by learning the essentials of basic life support. Having this knowledge and skill could make a ‘social doctor’ out of every individual who can now make an effort to attend on causalities before they deteriorate, thereby pave a path to a healthier society. ALERT has undertaken Emergency Response as its first and core project.Through this project ALERT aims to train various sections of the society in emergency response and also build support systems to make emergency care available to one and all in the society. This program is being taken to corporates, educational institutions and other social bodies. To register yourself for this course, kindly confirm your presence for the programme, through email by mailing to Chennai@ivolunteer.in or call us at 98414 87984.

Details on the Course:
Date: 26th April 2009
Timing: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Venue:Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR)24, Kothari Road,Nungambakkam,Chennai - 600 034,India.
Please do confirm as soon as possible as there are only a limited seats of 25 numbers for this course due to space constriction at the hall.

CSC-HCL's helping hand to Gnanadeepam a school for mentally challenged

We had been helping GNANADEEPAM, a school for mentally retarded. We helped them to put up stalls to sell the products made by the children. Prior to their annual day we sold their lucky dip tickets among the employees. This year they will have their annual day on 4th Apr. We are planning to sell their lucky dip tickets in Vadapalani, NMR and Amb 6. Later we will give them a chance to put up their stalls in various buildings. For selling the tickets Nagendra the leader of NM Road CSC team will send the mails to Codc staff and for non Codc staff other members can send on behalf of CSC and help sell the tickets. Negendra will coordinate and send the ticket books to sell the tickets. The short write up is as under. CSC is trying to make a small difference in their life. I am keeping the Admin staff also in the loop.

GNANADEEPAM is a registered charitable Trust and is run with the sole aim to empower the Special Children from the nearby area ( Pammal , Pallavaram ) to be Independent and to earn their living without being a dependent. GNANADEEPAM has, over the years, lit a small lamp of hope to give sufficient light in the life of these children by imparting basic education and vocational training FREE OF COST. Presently, GNANADEEPAM provides for about 40 children in the age group of 5 to 40 years guided by trained staff, apart from a Honorary Physiotherapist. Vocational training like weaving, tailoring, screen printing is being imparted to the eligible children at GNANADEEPAM. These children now weave & make bed sheets, towels, floor mats, varieties of shopping bags, lunch bags & screen printing on the associated jute products while finishing is done by the staff members. The produce is placed for sale at many IT Companies & other Corporate offices and the proceeds are partially catering to the child care, maintenance and administrative expenses. Their products are Laundry bags , Fruit baskets, Pooja bags ( for nava ratri ) , Door mats , Towels , Carpet , Cell phone covers , Glasswork bags (Rajasthani handicraft ) , cloth & jute bags ( of different sizes ), Lunch bags and many more ...

Please support them by making liberal purchases on that day !!! GNANADEEPAM's mission has always been to try and give a normal life to the special children. As a part of our joint efforts ( HCL & GNANADEEPAM), as is happening over the past few years, we are trying to make a small difference in the life of the special children.

In Our branch(Amb6)we sold nearly 3 booklets and gave Rs 2030 to gnanadeepam

HCL CSC Week - CRR

If we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much

Let me start of with two simple questions.

I am sure that many of us are good in mathematics and know various formulae. But how many of us here would know or atleast heard about the following formula?

CHILD LABOUR = HUMANITY – (LOVE * KINDNESS)

When a Child bends its head for Labour or for Begging, we should bend our heads which makes every citizen of this country ashamed. Today this is a subject that needs mending with the object called HUMANITY. Child Labour is a spiritual disease caused by “lack of compassion”, dreadful than the any other viruses. Poverty is another social disease which is caused by ‘Child Labour’. Thus Child labor and poverty are inevitably bound together. Children do not constitute anyone's property; they are neither the property of their parents nor even of society. They belong only to their own future of freedom.

Education is the only passport for these kids to have a better future. In serving the best interests of children, we serve the best interests of all humanity. The CSC has come out with a program called CHILD RESCUE & REHABILIATION (CRR) Program for the interest of such kids, who are in need for help rather a better future. They may not be on par with other kids nor gifted with such amenities, but still those kids are like any other kid who aspires a lot and dream about his/her future. The motive behind this CRR exercise is to identify children who are forced to do Child Labor and to Rescue/Motivate/Encourage them to join in Govt or Non- Profitable NGO’s. We are in the process of identifying Samaritans (volunteers) from each facility called CRR team and in turn this CRR team would create awareness to the employees about the CRR initiative and its plans. You will hear more on this shortly through Augustin, our program coordinator (Amb-6, Mob 9940139497, email: ajosephx@cisco.com ) and your respective CSC spocs of your facility. This is another journey of enlightening one’s life. What needed now is, increased efforts to promote participation and commitment; more services aimed souls with more parental involvement.
They are waiting for us. They badly need us. Come together and join hands to build up a fabulous alliance for this legendary rather spiritual journey.

>> About CRR:

The motive behind this CRR exercise is to identify children who are forced to do Child Labor and to Rescue/Motivate/Encourage them to join in Govt or Non- Profitable NGO’s.
>> Pointers from existing Child Labor Rehabilitation NGO’s: (Modus operandi of Govt. NGO’s)

1. Maria Joy Joshua of Child Development Projects under Social Welfare Development of the Govt. currently supports only the Rescued Child and not their family members.

2. On dialing and enquiring 1098 Child Labor Complain Number Cell, they have also said clearly that they would support the child who is an orphan and not the children who are with their family members.

3. As published in the daily ‘Dhinakaran’ on Feb 3rd, Labor and Employment Dept Chief Mr. Prabhakar Rao has said that the Indus Child Labor Scheme (Jointly formed by the Indian Govt Labor Dept and American Govt Labor Dept) is taking care of the Child Labors in and around the districts of Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Namakkal, Thiruvannamalai and Virudhu Nagar.
He also added that they will identify the children affected by Child Labor and as rehabilitation exercise will make them join in special schools. They would also provide Uniforms, Books, Lunch and Rs. 100 (Monthly) as a part of personal expenses for the children.

Indian Govt Labor Dept has formed 389 Self Helping Committee with a total fund allocation of Rs. 20.46/- Lacs in order to facilitate Child Laborers to join these special schools.

The committee would also take care of the Children’s parents if they are in critical situation to survive on a case to case basis.

4. Along with Government below welfare organization is successfully running for Child Labor.
State Child Labor Rehabilitation cum Welfare SocietyO/o Commissioner of LaborDMS Complex, TeynampetChennai 600006Phone: 044-24349442 Fax: 044-24341966email: tnchildlabour@yahoo.com

In Nandhanam (Office Number-24330354),

Mr.Veerappan (IL1)-9840159212
(IL2)-9442957888
Mr.Subramani (IL3)-9444159086

>> Primary Goal of CRR:

1. Need to support the Child’s family if that particular child is earning money for the survival of his/her family.
2. Work along with Indus Child Labor Scheme to achieve the above goal.

>> Action Plan:

Identify the volunteers from each facility for CRR.
CRR Team would create awareness to the employees about the CRR initiative and its plans.
Employees should inform to those volunteer members if they come across any child labor or they can directly contact to 1098 for making a complaint.
If the Child Labor is an orphan, Govt. will take direct initiative to make the child join in any of the special schools for Child Labor.
If the Child Labor is earning for the survival of his/her parents/family, CRR should please the Govt to support their parents (along with Indus Child Labor Scheme or any other NGO’s).

HCL CSC Week - NRP

“Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community”

One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something. Not only Albert Einstein, but I also believe that “Only a life lived for others, is a life worthwhile.” It is more important to become a man of value rather man of success. We here at HCL has men of both values and success. Now that there is so much of pollution in the Air, we don’t have any option left other than to use our lungs to deposit those. When we celebrate each and every milestone in science and technology, we neglect the fact that it is certainly causing a kind of damage to Mother Nature. Remember all modern technology always owes an apology to the ecology. Today all the Black and White (referring News papers) are in Red (referring Violence). This fact reveals that we kill good trees for all bad news.
So far, be it any Civilization that history teaches us, all have wrecked the planet from seafloor to stratosphere. None can deny this. If civilization has risen from the Stone Age, it can rise again from the current Wastepaper Age also. And this time it is a civilization that is going to fight for a green planet, prevent any further harassments on Mother Nature, stop any exploitation of natural resources and thereby healing the earth. We say we love flowers, yet we pluck them. We say we love trees, yet we cut them down. Now I am afraid when someone tells me that they love me!?!?! We are about half a century away from being ecologically and economically bankrupt because of global warming. So it’s now or never.

As a part of CSC week, we are planning for NRP (Nature Revival Program). Aim of the NRP is to create awareness on hazards of environmental loss. To minimize these losses we are planning for 2 activities as follows.
1. Plantation
2. Sapling Distribution
The program coordinator for NRP is Shailesh (STC, 99625 10906. shailesh.joshi@hcl.in). You will hear more from your facility CSC Team leader on the execution part. Looking forward to your support and participation.

Remember, we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We have borrowed it from our children. There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew. Man is a complex being: he makes deserts bloom - and lakes die.
Let’s make desserts bloom very soon!

In Our Branch(Amb 6)we planted 8 saplings in front of office and employeers bought good number of saplings at the time of CSC week.

HCL CSC Week - Teach @ Office

CSC had come out with many valuable programs and had always tasted the success in each program with the untiring support and encouragement from my fellow HCLites. This time it’s all about another unique program, “Teach @ Office”. This program focuses on the contribution from you for a holistic development of Security Guards posted at HCL premises in a subtle way by equipping them with the right information, creating awareness, imparting skills and knowledge. For example, teaching them the spoken English and other soft skills etc. which will certainly enhance their personality, indeed personal value. Education enlightens the future. Whenever I see a candle I immediately recall my teachers who took pains to give me wisdom and knowledge. It’s very obvious that teachers are like candle, which consumes itself to give light for others. Former President of our country and a great educationalist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan always quote that teachers are the best minds in the country. A teacher is not a person who gives a man a fish and feed him for a day; but teach him the how to fish and feed him for the life time. Now how great is to be teacher?

Here I would like to make a first call and invite volunteers to be part of this ‘great journey of enlightenment’. You would be expected to assist us for just 2 hrs in a week by teaching your our security guards. We know that the roots of the education are bitter, but the fruits are always sweet. It’s now time for us to share this to our fellow persons. Remember “The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.”

Rahul (Amb 6, Mob:9940688577 email: rahulganapathy_s@hcl.in ) is the program coordinator. You will hear more from him on the plan and execution.

Looking forward to you as a teacher.

HCL volunteers to engage with and contribute to the holistic development of Security Guards posted at HCL premises in a subtle way by equipping them with the right information, creating awareness, imparting skills and knowledge to help improve:
Quality of Life for them and their families
Self-esteem and job enrichment
A slice of life that they have missed and no longer have access to

Program Name: Teach@Office
Execution: Across HCL India

What: Volunteers will have interactive sessions with security guards and share knowledge on various fields of life like General awareness, English speaking, government policies, Health, Hygiene and Computers.

Who: HCL Employees & Security guards

Why:
The guards are oblivious to life beyond their work
A majority of them are unaware basic things like how to manage their finances etc
Years of continued hardships have made most of them cynical about life
They feel that their work is non – contributory

Where: The session will be organized in various HCL facilities by HCL volunteers for security guards of the facility.

When: HCL volunteers and Security guards will have these sessions off their office hours and their working hours will not be disturbed. A suitable timing will be discussed and finalized by different facility program SPOC/team and their facility Admin team.

How:
By focusing on these key areas, the aim of Teach @ Office is to change lives by promoting holistic development
Improve- Basic English Spoken Skills and Computer Skills
Impart – Knowledge to help improve their Quality of Life!
Enhance – Self Esteem and restore confidence through personality development sessions
Restore – Hope in a better future!

HCL CSC Week - FNP

We hope you have seen our mail on CSC week sent yesterday. Today we give you a brief on Friend in Need Program (FNP) and what we are planning to do with your support.

The aim of FNP is “to bring joy and happiness to the people who are challenged or orphaned and to the poor and convey them that we care”.

We have short listed number of orphanages and old age homes to work with and we have visited them . Depending on the resources and volunteers we will enlarge the list. This week, have added one more to the list, after our CSC members visited a home called “Hands of Compassion” at Red Hills. Here they have 115 children. Also we invite you to participate and contribute in any of the programs for the betterment of the community, as always you do. You had been a wonderful contributor with generous heart to the CSC activities and we wouldn’t have succeeded in all those initiatives without your untiring support.

New Year day with under privileged: We take this opportunity to thank all the HCLites who took part in large numbers with their family members in response to our mail. It was amazing and encouraging to see so many of you volunteered to work and brought in so much of gifts. The complete catering arrangement for the whole day was managed by HCL volunteers. The gifts poured more than we wanted. A total of 850 blinds and inmates of orphanages gathered. It was heartwarming to see these usually sad faces transformed with delight and danced to the loud music played by the blind band. We are sure this day will linger in their mind for long. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you guys for this extraordinary support which turned this event a grand success.

HCL CSC is looking for your hand.
